It is alarming but true.  More than 60 percent of young people who attended church fall away from their faith during the college years, according to a recent Barna Research Group study.  And why is this?  One doesn't need to look much further than the policies that restrict students’ religious liberties on public university and college campuses today.  Hundreds of prevalent institutions of higher education have speech codes in effect that are in direct violation of students’ constitutional rights.  In other words, Christian students cannot speak freely about their beliefs.  Their worldview is effectively censored in order to conform to the campus mindset—the approved politically correct way of thinking.  And this is just one way that colleges and universities censor religious students.

Under Attack

Public universities from California to Maine are using speech codesspeech zones and speech-restrictive policiesstudent activity fee policies“nondiscrimination” policies, and academic and employment retaliation to restrict Christian students’ fundamental liberties:freedom of speechassociationequal accessequality of opportunity and exercising of their religious beliefs. Students, faculty, and staff are not only silenced, but often face punishment for living out their faith and discussing what they believe. At the same time, America’s public universities and colleges support and accommodate student groups that reject cornerstone American principles. Biblical worldviews are shrugged off as intolerant and hateful, while behaviors traditionally considered immoral are promoted by the curricula and campus politics.

What Is Being Done?

Alliance Defending Freedom is working to ensure our universities once again become beacons of light, where academic freedom is championed rather than suppressed. Its attorneys have won dozens of cases against universities, restoring campuses across America to the marketplace of ideas they were intended to be.

You can help Alliance Defending Freedom protect the rights of students on public university campuses and ensure that their freedoms are not a distant a memory, but a living reality, as they learn that their Christian faith is something to be shared and not hidden under a bowl. You can do this by donating your time to keep informed about the issues, donating your voice and talk to others about issues facing Christian students at our public universities and by donating your financial support which will allow Alliance Defending Freedom to protect the rights of Christian students, faculty and staff on campus.
